GMDN Agency signs collaboration agreement with UK's Department of Health and Social Care

12 September 2025

The Global Medical Device Nomenclature (GMDN) Agency is pleased to announce the signing of a significant collaboration agreement with the UK’s Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC). This umbrella agreement marks a pivotal step in further embedding GMDN into all regulatory databases, Medical Device Data programmes, and NHS programmes across the UK.

Under this new agreement, the GMDN will continue to be integrated into key regulatory databases used by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) and will play a crucial role in upcoming Medical Device Data programmes, including the Product Information Management system (PIM) within the NHS.

PIM will make the sharing of medical device data easier, more efficient and more consistent by combining and displaying a range of data from existing sources whilst facilitating requests for additional data.

The GMDN is already used widely by the NHS to support its management of healthcare equipment and inventory and in 2023 the GMDN was approved as a fundamental standard supporting the identification of medical devices for the NHS.

This collaboration aims to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of medical device regulation and management within the UK healthcare system.

“We are thrilled to partner with the DHSC in this important initiative,” said Deniz Bruce, CEO of the GMDN Agency.

“This agreement underscores our commitment to improving patient safety and streamlining regulatory processes through the widespread adoption of GMDN.

“The integration of the GMDN into NHS programmes will further support the standardisation and harmonisation of medical device nomenclature, ensuring consistency and clarity in the identification and classification of medical devices. This will ultimately benefit healthcare providers, regulators, and patients alike.”
